Why did Charles Virtue change his name?
Names are funny things; they are given to us and become a part of us - all mostly without our permission or input. By the time most of us are old enough to understand the weight and importance of a name it is already so well ingrained into our lives and identity that there’s no immediate path away from it. I was given a name at birth and started using Virtue as a last name in my late teens. My birth name and family name never resonated with me, it’s as simple as that. I took the last name Virtue because it made sense at the time, but truth be told, no part of my name ever felt like me. So during the pandemic lockdowns I tried experimenting with different names and found a few that really felt like they worked for me. However, the sad truth of public life is that it’s not easy to change your name, and so I gave up on the venture. Because to be honest, it wasn’t worth the effort of explaining it to everyone and getting everyone used to it, when it really isn’t that big of a deal to me. Lots of people, spiritual or otherwise, change their names for various reasons. Some even channel their names or have new spiritual names given to them. It’s a totally normal thing. There’s nothing complicated, secret or otherwise mysterious going on, I was simply trying something out and ultimately did not move forward with it. Sorry if you were expecting a more exciting answer :)
